Saskatchewan Agriculture reports widespread rain over the past week delayed harvest across the province, but will provide a welcome benefit for later seeded crops that are still at the grain filling stage.
Saskatchewan Agriculture released its crop report yesterday for the period from August 4th to August 10th.
Agustine Osei, a Crops Extension Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says widespread rainfall was received across the province and, while the moisture will benefit later seeded crops that are still filling, it also contributed to delayed crop development and slowed the harvest.

Crops continue to mature across the province.
However, we had cooler weather conditions that slowed harvest progress so at the moment harvest progress remains at two percent, same as it was in the previously reported crop report.
However, this harvest progress is still higher than the one percent that was harvested at this time of the year last year.
So, most of the crops that are getting taken off at the moment are the winter cereals and the spring cereals with a few pulse crops getting harvested as well.
It's variable across the province and the variability is due to the stage of crop maturity.
Because of the extreme wetness at the start of the season some of the regions couldn't get seeding done early so that kind of delayed some of the crops in terms of their staging in those regions.
So, the slow progress is as a result of the cool conditions and also crops not matured in some of the places.
So, the southwest region is currently leading with five percent and other regions are mostly one percent and some of them are less than one percent.

Osei says, while many farmers will be looking for warmer conditions to advance crop development and get the harvest restarted, lot of regions still need rain to help the later seeded crops that are at the grain filling stage.
