Farmers Look to Newly Elected Government to Focus on Resolving Agricultural Trade Tensions
Florian Possberg - Polar Pork Farms

A partner with Polar Pork says Canadian farmers will be looking to Canada's newly elected minority Liberal government to resolve Canada's trade disputes with both the United States and China.
Following Monday's election, Prime Minister Mark Carney has maintained the Liberal's minority government.
Florian Possberg, a partner with Polar Pork recalls, the Americans threatened 25 percent across the board tariffs and, while most of our agricultural products have escaped those tariffs, the threat is still on the table.

Clip-Florian Possberg-Polar Pork:
Now that we have a Prime Minister with a mandate and a government that looks like it will be a minority Liberal government, they'll have to at some point in the near future start negotiations with the Americans who, whether we like it or not, are our biggest market for many of our products.
Quite frankly to do without the American market would be hugely problematic for Canadians.
China is the other big player in the viability of our agriculture and the China-American trade war has resulted in tariffs where we decided to support the Americans with tariffs on electronic vehicles.
Well, China goes ahead and slaps tariffs on agriculture products, particularly pork and canola.
So, there's two big things that need to be settled here, the U.S-China thing so that some of the things like the 25 percent tariff on pork and the 100 percent tariff on canola meal and oil can be put to rest.
The second one is the Mexican, U.S. and Canadian trade deal, which seems like it's going to be renegotiated and it looks very much like the Americans are holding some significant cards in this game.

Possberg say agriculture received little attention during the election from any of the parties but he is hopeful the concerns of farmers will be considered moving forward.
