Developments Related Foot and Mouth Disease and African Swine Fever Highlight SHIC’s April Swine Disease Monitoring Report
Dr. Lisa Becton - Swine Health Information Center

Farmscape for April 11, 2025

The Swine Health Information Center reports changing global patterns related to the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease and African Swine Fever underscore the need to continued adherence to standard biosecurity protocols in North America.
As part of its April eNewsletter the Swine Health Information Center has released its monthly domestic and global swine disease monitoring reports.
SHIC Associate Director Dr. Lisa Becton reports globally, while Germany is regaining Foot and Mouth Disease free status with most countries, we are seeing increased Foot and Mouth activity across Hungary, Slovakia, South Korea and other areas and African Swine Fever remains active, especially in the Dominican Republic, Vietnam and Europe and still presents a risk.

Clip-Dr. Lisa Becton-Swine Health Information Center:
When we asses these two different viruses it is important to look at what we're doing for biosecurity in general because lot of times our basic biosecurity procedures of sanitation, excluding visitors and having down time for foreign tourists, those things are very important not only for domestic diseases but also to reduce the introduction of diseases that are not currently in the United States.
When we're looking at things like Foot and Mouth and even for ASF it is important to ensure there is a reducer or stoppage of illegal trade or import of meat and meat products but also to look at, if you have people that travel overseas to an area where the viruses are present, to not wear the same clothing or footwear back onto the farms because those viruses can remain on clothing and remain active for a period of time.
So again, its very important to consider all of the basic day to day biosecurity procedures and implement those on a routine basis on your farm.

Dr. Becton notes the Swine Health Information Center and American Association of Swine Veterinarians will host a webinar April 25th at 10 am central looking at Foot and mouth Disease.
