Canada and U.S. Cooperating to Protect Against ASF
Dr. Egan Brockhoff - Canadian Pork Council

Farmscape for December 20, 2018

The Veterinary Counsel with the Canadian Pork Council says the Canadian and U.S. pork sectors are working together closely to keep North America free of African Swine Fever.
African Swine Fever has spread to 23 provincial regions of China since the infection was first reported in August.
Dr. Egan Brockhoff, the Veterinary Counsel with the Canadian Pork Council, who spent 10 days in China earlier this month, says this virus has taken a devastating toll on the Chinese pork sector and is something we need to keep out of North America.

Clip-Dr. Egan Brockhoff-Canadian Pork Council:
There is huge anxiety in China right now about African Swine Fever.
The virus is moving in a significant way and is having a huge impact on pork producers and all levels of pork producers there, everything from large farms to small farms.
They call their small farms anything around a thousand sows, all the way down to backyard farms, families that have one pig in their backyard, two pigs in their backyard.
The impact on them has been devastating as the government tries to control the movement of that virus.
There's huge anxiety in China right now about contaminated feed ingredients.
The virus has been found in some ingredients.
The challenges just continue to move throughout the industry.
As we've looked at what's happening in Europe, with significant movement of the virus throughout Europe, now significant movement of the virus throughout China, certainly this is a virus that we want to keep out of Canada.

Dr. Brockhoff says the Canadian pork sector has been working closely with the U.S. pork sector, and with universities and veterinary groups to ensure everyone is in alignment and moving forward in a similar direction.
