SIP Research Offers Options for Improving Profitability
Ken Engele - Prairie Swine Centre

Farmscape for October 3, 2018

Pork producers looking for ideas to improve their profitability are being encouraged to explore research conducted through Swine Innovation Porc.
CDPQ in partnership with the Prairie Swine Centre on behalf of Swine Innovation Porc established 27 demonstration sites across Canada to help display and accelerate the adoption of new technologies and management strategies in the pork sector.
Ken Engele, the Manager of Technology Transfer with the Prairie Swine Centre, says seven activities were demonstrated.

Clip-Ken Engele-Prairie Swine Centre:
The first was successfully converting to group sow housing.
The second was environmental enrichment strategies and improved lying areas for gestating sows.
Another looked at reducing water consumption, another looked at low cost feeding strategies for optimal sow productivity.
The big one was auditing best management practices in these locations as well.
The second last was swine health biosecurity, specifically looking at rapid assessment of trailer cleanliness.
The last was an overriding one, communications and that's taking the results from these different demonstrations and bringing them out to the larger pork industry throughout Canada.
The information is available to anybody looking for more information or more detail on the project.
A good starting point is to visit any one of the web sites from the three partnering organizations.
That would be the Prairie Swine Centre, CDPQ or SIP.
We made a very deliberate point of making all the information available in both French and English and that way we can ensure that we reach every producer throughout Canada.
One of the other things, if you go to our web site, you'll find the information is available in different types of forms.
There'll be everything from presentations that we recorded at the various seminars we hosted to fact sheets, to posters and everything in between.
There's different types of resources for the type of information the producer is looking for.

Engele says demonstration is an important tool in increasing the speed of adoption and one that be made use of more in the future.
For Farmscape.Ca, I'm Bruce Cochrane.
