Rain Still Needed in Much of Saskatchewan
Daphne Cruise - Saskatchewan Agriculture

Farmscape for June 22, 2018

Saskatchewan Agriculture reports significant amounts of rain will be needed, particularly in the southwest and west central regions to maintain crop development and growth.
Saskatchewan Agriculture released its weekly crop report yesterday.
Daphne Cruise, a Cropping Management Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says despite this year's late start seeding is pretty much complete right in line with normal.

Clip-Daphne Cruise-Saskatchewan Agriculture:
When it comes to looking at crop development, about 75 percent of the pulse crops and fall cereals, spring cereals are at normal stages of development and 70 percent of the oilseeds are at normal stages of development for this time of year.
The rest of that percentage is falling into behind normal, so about a quarter of the crop is behind normal in development for this time of year.
Again that's mostly due to our late spring start and our dry conditions, especially during germination.
The crop just sat in the ground a little longer than it maybe should have.
That was mostly in the southern regions of the province.
As we move north germination and moisture was pretty good throughout most of the seeding season.
Across the province our topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as rated as four percent surplus, 67 percent adequate, 24 percent short and five percent very short.
In particular the southwest and west central regions of the province so areas around Val Marie, north to areas around Vanguard, Shaunavon, Gull Lake, Success a bit, over to Leader and then as we move north Outlook, Rosetown, Kindersley, Hanley, Kenaston areas are in pretty good need of moisture.
At this point significant rain is needed in the next little while to help those crops continue to grow.

Cruise says, for those most part, everyone is hoping for moisture especially in those regions that could very much use it at this point.
