Antimicrobial Use Regulations to Tighten but Antibiotics Still Available
Dr. Egan Brockhoff - Prairie Swine Health Services

A veterinarian with Prairie Swine Health Services says, despite a planned tightening of regulations governing antibiotic use in livestock, producers will still have access to the products needed to prevent and treat disease.
"New Antibiotic Use Guidelines, Regulation and Industry Guidelines" were discussed earlier this month as part of the 2018 Banff Pork Seminar.
Dr. Egan Brockhoff, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with Prairie Swine Health Services, observes antimicrobial resistance is an increasing challenge faced by both the veterinary and medical communities and there's been a global initiative happening in the last few years around antimicrobial resistance mitigation.

Clip-Dr. Egan Brockhoff-Prairie Swine Health Services:
The Government of Canada is moving all medically important antimicrobials in Canada to prescription only.
That means all water soluble, injectable and feed grade medications will become prescription only.
They're also taking away growth promotion label claims for all medically important antimicrobials and we will only be able to use them now with these new rules for prevention and the treatment of disease.
All classes of antimicrobials that you use today will still be available tomorrow.
Health Canada is not taking away any antimicrobials.
They're taking away the ability to use them as growth promoters and so those label claims that used to have low dose long duration application of antibiotics, those all go away.
All of the antibiotics that we use today, we'll still be able to use for prevention of disease and for treatment of disease.
They will be prescription only but they will be available.

Dr. Brockhoff says increased veterinary oversight of antimicrobial use in the United States has resulted in a significant reduction of antimicrobial use, upwards of 30 percent and higher in some categories.
He says making everything prescription only, has helped producers understand that in certain circumstances they didn't need to use antimicrobials.
