The Executive Director of the Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative says removal of Table-4 from the Feeds Act will allow nutritionists to formulate swine rations that benefit both the animals and the environment.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is reviewing public comments on its proposed modernization of Canada's livestock feed regulatory framework, including eliminating Table-4 of the Feeds Acts.
John Carney, the Executive Director of the Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Imitative, explains Table-4, which specifies minimum nutrient levels, including phosphorus, has become out of date.

Feed is the major variable cost in raising livestock and so, like anything in this world, continuous improvement has taken place.
There's been a relentless search for the most cost effective beneficial ingredients.
There's been new ingredients brought into rations, things like dried distillers grains and solubles from the ethanol industry, there's been technology advances, different enzymes and phytase, making more of the phosphorus available to the animal, there's been extensive research into all aspects of feed formulation including things like reducing the size of the feed particles so they they're better digested by the animals.
The whole goal is get more of the nutrients and the protein in the feed translated into the protein in the product we're producing so there's less excreted and a more efficient system and I'm happy to report that tremendous strides have been made in livestock efficiency over the last 30 years.

Carney says removing this impediment will allow nutritionists to formulate rations that provide the most benefits both environmentally and economically.
