New University of Manitoba Manure Testing Facility Becomes Operational
Dr. Qiang Zhang - University of Manitoba
Farmscape for October 29, 2001 (Episode 803) The University of Manitoba says its new large scale manure testing facility will allow researchers to conduct a broad range of manure studies under scientifically controlled conditions. The 20 thousand dollar manure testing facility was built on the University of Manitoba's main campus with funding provided by the Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative. Construction of the new facility was completed last month and scientists expect to begin conducting research as early as next month. Biosystems Engineering Professor Dr. Qiang Zhang says the system is basically an insulated chamber which can simulate different types of manure storage systems. Clip-Dr. Qiang Zhang-University of Manitoba Within this chamber we have different manure storage tanks. and we also have a ventilation system built into the chamber to control the temperature inside the chamber. We also have an air delivery system to deliver fresh air to the manure storage tanks and an exhaust system to take the manure gases out of the tanks to the outside of the building. In each manure storage tank we have an air sampling system. We can actually draw air samples from the hep space and also we can draw manure samples at different depths from each tank. The other feature of the system is the delivery of fresh air. We can actually deliver fresh air to the hep space or we can bubble air through the manure to simulate aerobic conditions. Dr. Zhang says scientists will be able to perform a broad range of research under controlled conditions such as evaluating the effect of feed additives on manure, the effect of oxygen levels on manure or the effectiveness of manure additives. He says the University has already been approached by different companies to test various manure treatment technologies.
