Farmscape for March 6, 2023
The Executive Director of Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan says the Food and Farming Champion Award is an opportunity to draw attention to the good work being done to raise the public's awareness of agriculture.
Last month, as part of its Ag Awareness summit in Saskatoon, Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan named former Saskatchewan Deputy Agriculture Minister Alana Cook as its 2022 Food and Farming Champion Award recipient.
Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan Executive Director Clinton Monchuk says society in Canada is becoming more and more removed from primary agricultural production and this award supports the efforts of individuals to help bridge that gap.
Clip-Clinton Monchuk-Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan:
It recognizes the efforts of an individual to actually build that trust of Canadian consumers and we really do need to recognize that because there's more and more people that are becoming removed from farming activities.
They're not too sure how their food is being produced and we want to make sure that there are avenues and there are individuals that are championing the efforts to build trust in agriculture.
It kind of allows others to see what is being done and that's what we're seeing.
We're seeing individuals that are taking little steps, whether it's posting on social media or talking to individuals in their own communities or talking to their schools about what they're doing on their farms or ranches.
Every little piece of this helps, so when we celebrate one, we celebrate all.
I think that is one of the big things with this award and something that Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan is very proud to be a part of and make sure that we are getting out into the general public and making a difference with those who want to know more about their food.
Monchuk says the Food and Farming Champion Award provides a process that allows those who are out there building trust to be recognized within the province and throughout Canada.
