The outgoing chair of Manitoba Pork says it's important for pork producers to maintain good working relationships with government, other commodity groups and other associations to deal with ongoing challenges.
Delegates attending Manitoba Pork's annual general meeting next week in Winnipeg will elect at least two new members to its ten member board of directors, including the three positions coming up for reelection as well as two vacant director at large positions.
Karl Kynoch, who is vacating his director at large position and who will be replaced as chair following the AGM when directors form their new executive, says despite their challenges producers in Manitoba are leaders in the world and its been a great pleasure to represent the industry as chair of Manitoba Pork.

I always look at representing the hog industry as a privilege and an honor to be able to do that.
I would advise the next chair, he needs to look at the industry as a whole and look forward to where it needs to go and what needs to be done to make the industry strong and to keep it strong.
Also he needs to work very closely with government. It doesn't matter what government is in power but the chair needs to work closely with the government of the day and see how they can come to agreement in terms on moving the issues forward, environmental issues or what ever pops up.
There will always be issues to deal with so strong relationships with other commodity groups, with the government and other associations is very important for the chair to have.

Kynoch says Manitoba's pork industry has led the way in terms of improving animal health, getting better feed conversion and increasing production and despite the challenges in competing with other countries he has full confidence the industry will continue to do that moving forward.
And he suggests achievements in changing the way we raise hogs in response to changes to Canada's Pig Code of Practice need to be promoted on world markets.
