The executive director of Winter Cereals Canada reports, with winter about half over, this year's fall planted cereal crops look to be in good shape.
Members of the Saskatchewan Winter Cereals Development Commission, the organization that represents the interests of winter wheat, fall rye and winter triticale growers in Saskatchewan, met Monday in Saskatoon for their annual meeting.
Jake Davidson, the executive director of Winter Cereals Canada, reports in talking to growers on hand for that meeting, their attitude seems positive.

People in Saskatchewan in most areas seem to be happy enough.
Crop was possibly a little slow getting started.
They didn't have a lot of leaves showing but generally speaking most of them feel they've got a reasonable amount of snow cover.
Some were even actually thinking that this little warm spell we're going to get and it's supposed to go above zero in the Moose Jaw area in the next day or so, they were thinking the soil might warm up a little so a very positive outlook in Saskatchewan at this point.
We're thinking around 230,000 acres because of the fall seeding problem.
In Saskatchewan the major variety tends to lean towards Buteo.
There was a lot of a new variety by the name of Moats put in this year and then it kind of trails off from there.
Not too much Flourish or Emerson went into Saskatchewan although Emerson will probably become more popular.
Saskatchewan, that used to be fusarium free, can no longer wave that flag and brag so there will be more attention paid to fusarium resistance in the future.

Davidson says to maximize growth potential in the spring we'll need to see adequate snow cover maintained through the rest of the winter followed by a reasonable prolonged snowmelt to give the soil a chance to warm up and give those crops a good start.
