Nutrition Fact Sheets Offer Consumers Valuable Health Information

Provincial pork organizations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, P.E.I. and Nova Scotia are distributing three new nutritional fact sheets designed to help consumers make healthier food choices.

Three new nutrition fact sheets, "Meat You at the Table", "Get Dense with Your Food" and "Healthy Ways for Healthy Weights" were developed by Alberta Pork and are being distributed to consumers and heath professionals who do diet counselling.

Manitoba Pork Council Hone Economist Marlene McDonald says the sheets contain basic useful information for people wanting to know what to include in their diets and how much of it.

They're really quite versatile.

They have a lot of information.

For example the Meat You at the Table fact sheet has information on Canada's Food Guide, how much food is required from each of the four food groups, how many servings and then exactly what a serving is, which one issue with people.

They don't often know just how much a serving of meat or vegetables is.

Also talking about portion control and the importance of lean meats and identifying some lean meats and how to keep them lean in terms of cooking.

The Get Dense with Your Food talks about nutrient density and what it is.

Nutrient dense food is food that has a relatively high level of nutrients such as protein, vitamins and minerals compared to the calorie content and how to include them in meal planning.

The Healthy Ways for Healthy Weights sheet talks about fad diets and portion sizes and how much, for example, a serving size of meat is and how to calculate how many grams of protein you require each day and also some important notes for healthy weight and healthy weight habits.

McDonald says the fact sheets can be obtained by contacting any of the participating provincial pork organization either directly or through their internet web sites.
