NPPC Watching Ratification of USMCA
Jim Monroe - National Pork Producers Council

Farmscape for October 9, 2018

The Senior Communications Director with the National Pork Producers Council says the U.S. pork sector will be watching closely as the U.S. government moves toward ratification of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
Canada, the United States and Mexico have concluded negotiations aimed at creating a modernized North American trade agreement, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement and now the deal must be ratified by the three governments.
National Pork Producers Council Senior Communications Director Jim Monroe says we now have the framework for a new agreement that ensures zero tariff access for the pork sector for the long term.

Clip-Jim Monroe-National Pork Producers Council:
We're an industry that is in expansion mode.
We have significant demand for U.S. pork around the world.
We produce the safest, the highest quality, the most affordable pork of any country and, based on that demand, we have see in recent years investment to capitalize on that opportunity and I think the uncertainty that we've seen around exports over the past year or so has inhibited investment.
We have established this as a quote, unquote key vote for our members.
Essentially what that means is the agreement obviously needs to be ratified by Congress.
We will be watching support for the agreement very closely and making sure that our members and we represent the interests of 60 thousand pork producers across the U.S.
We'll be making sure that they are very clear on yes and no votes on this pact and generally what kind of support we're seeing from members of Congress.
It's very important.
We don't do that on may issues and it's one we're going to be watching closely.

Monroe says one of the biggest points of uncertainty for the U.S. pork sector has been trade with Mexico and this agreement goes a long way in removing that.
