Changing Canadian Veterinary Antimicrobial Use Regulations in Line with Global Trend
Dr. Egan Brockhoff - Canadian Pork Council

Farmscape for September 6, 2018

The Veterinary Counsel with the Canadian Pork Council says changes to regulations pertaining to the veterinary use of antimicrobials will bring Canada's oversight of antimicrobial use in food animals more in line with that of its major competitors.
As of December 1st all medically important antimicrobials used in veterinary medicine in Canada will be sold by prescription only.
Dr. Egan Brockhoff, the Veterinary Counsel with the Canadian Pork Council, says these changes have been driven by a global awareness of the issue of increasing antimicrobial resistance.

Clip-Dr. Egan Brockhoff-Canadian Pork Council:
There's no question the whole world is moving towards increased veterinary oversight of antimicrobials in food animals.
Canada is certainly not the first and we won't be the last to undertake these goals.
If we look to our partners to the south, in the United States the movement to prescription and veterinary feed directive only happened a couple of years ago.
What we saw in the United States was a fairly natural reduction of antimicrobial use, largely because those discussions started occurring.
If we look at the reports out of the United States, there hasn't been a negative impact on food safety or animal welfare and so I don't predict we will see any different outcomes here in Canada.
I expect producers and veterinarians will work closely to ensure food safety and animal health continue to be at the front of their minds as they're raising food for their family and for families all over the world.

Dr. Brockhoff notes the European union already has prescription only and throughout Asia we're starting to see the adoption of prescription only.
He says all of the developed pork world continues to move in a very similar direction while striving to avoid creating challenges for producers, for food safety, for food security, animal welfare or animal health.
For Farmscape.Ca, I'm Bruce Cochrane.
