Flexibility Collaboration Key to Success of Swine Health Information Center
Dr. Paul Sundberg - Swine Health Information Center

Farmscape for July 13, 2018

The Executive Director of the Swine Health Information Center says flexibility will be critical in  successfully responding to emerging animal disease issues.
During a meeting last month in Des Moines, the Board of Directors of the Swine Health Information Center reaffirmed its mission statement.
Dr,. Paul Sundberg, the Executive Director of the Swine Health Information Center, says over the last two or even three decades health issues within the pork industry have changed dramatically and amid that rapid change and in the face of new and emerging disease, the centre needs remains flexible enough to help with detection, preparedness and response.

Clip-Dr,. Paul Sundberg-Swine Health Information Center:
It's simply a matter of keeping our eyes open, keeping focused on the mission of helping the health of the U.S. pork industry and being able to look over the hill and to say here are the things we think we need to have happen and act on those.
One of the things we have done and we're going to continue to do this from year to year is go out across the country in the summer and the fall to get input from producers and veterinarians, from all across the country, in different sizes and scopes of companies, of operations, of farms, all about pork producers and all about pork production and put together a plan of work for the next year.
I think that that's one of the examples of implementing this flexibility because those things change.
From year to year, every year those priorities change and that's part of the application of flexibility.
Even within that plan of work we also have to be able to respond quickly to other industry needs and that's part of that flexibility.

Dr. Sundberg says the power of the swine health information centre is in its collaboration.
He credits the strength of the centre to the cooperation from the universities, the diagnostic labs, pork producers, their veterinarians and the different pork industry associations within the U.S. and even within Canada
