The General Manager of Manitoba Pork says World Pork Expo offers an excellent opportunity for Canadian and U.S. pork producers to interact and discuss issues of mutual concern.
Representatives of Manitoba Pork will travel to Des Moines, Iowa next week for World Pork Expo.
Andrew Dickson, the General Manager of Manitoba Pork, says it's important for Canadian pork producers to meet with their American counterparts at as many events as possible at a very local level to talk about how the sector is dealing with issues of mutual concern.

There's an exceptional amount of trade between the two countries both in terms of live animals and in pork.
We ship a lot of pork into the United States and they do the same thing back into the Canadian market.
We don't want any problems at the border.
This appreciation of the complexities of running a pork business in both countries is very apparent.
When you get talking with producers there, they face the same issues of dealing with environmental concerns, the same issues in terms of trying to make the business profitable, feed costs, the cost of raising pigs, trying to get labor, training, movement of animals, transportation issues, health issues, identification of animals, quality control, antibiotic use, antibiotic resistance new and upcoming diseases.
There's all kinds of topics to talk about and share with other producers and their organizations.
You can't do it by memo so you have to get down there and you've got to visit with to people and get to know them.
At the same time we have delegations of U.S. farmers coming to events here in Manitoba as well.

Dickson notes a lot of Canadians travel to World Pork Expo to take advantage of the opportunity to see the latest technology, take part in the various seminars and meet with suppliers.
