Canadian Pork Sector Delegation to Travel to Japan
Rick Bergmann - Canadian Pork Council

Farmscape for March 1, 2018

A delegation representing Canada's pork sector will travel to Japan to meet with key buyers of Canadian pork and learn more about one the Canada's most important markets.
Canada, Japan and nine other Pacific Rim Nations have agreed to participate in the Comprehensive Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Rick Bergmann, the Chair of the Canadian Pork Council, says the relationship that Canada has had with Japan in the past has been good and it looks like it's going to be great in the future.

Clip-Rick Bergmann-Canadian Pork Council:
We've got representatives from across our country that are going to be joining us on this mission and we'll be leaving next week.
It'll be certainly a learning time for all of us but it'll be also a relationship building effort that we'll be successful at with not only the companies that import our product but the retailers as well where we'll be spending significant time with.
We've got representation from the provincial pork boards from all regions of Canada.
We'll be very focused when we get to Japan.
We're not there for a long time but we're there to really understand the market place and also meet the people that are buying our products.
There are some very large entities in Japan that are buying on the retail side the pork.
There's a World Food-Ex show.
We'll be there and our Agriculture Minister MacAulay will be there with us as well.
There's large supermarket chains that we will be going to see and that will help us to further build the rapport that we have.
There are Canadian processors that have offices there and significant infrastructure so we'll be meeting with some of those processors as well in Japan.

Bergmann describes the new Comprehensive Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership as a win win for both countries.
