Saskatchewan Ranchers Uses Social Media to Connect with Consumers
Adrienne Ivey - View from the Ranch Porch

Farmscape for December 20, 2017

The 2017 Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan Food and Farming Champion says her involvement in social media has allowed her to connect with consumers and help clear up some of the misinformation out there about farming.
Last week an Ituna area rancher and internet blogger was named as this year's winner of the Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan Food and Farming Champion Award.
Adrienne Ivey, the author of "View from the Ranch Porch," says she got her start in social media on Facebook after seeing so much misinformation about Canadian farming.

Clip-Adrienne Ivey-View from the Ranch Porch:
Consumers today are really inundated with all these stories and facts and scare tactics and some of them are positive and some of them are negative and it's really really difficult for them to sort through what's real and what isn't.
Being able to show that I am just like them, I'm a mom and I'm taking my kids to hockey and to ball and volunteering in my school and things like that.
When I can really relate to them on a human basis then they understand that I have nothing to gain by spinning the stories of what happens on our ranch, that I'm really truly just sharing what it looks like on a daily basis then it makes a huge difference to them.
When they are making choices of where to purchase their food or what type of food they're purchasing, that once they have somebody that they feel they know and can trust that it just helps them sort through what's real and what isn't.
I feel like it's that for every single farmer.
If we just started with influencing the people around us and within our sphere then we could really counter some of that terrible misinformation that's out there that we all know aren't true, but the consumers don't know.

Ivey's comments and conversation can be found at viewfromtheranchporch.com or most social media forums including Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat.
For Farmscape.Ca, I'm Bruce Cochrane.
