Average Yields Above Average Crop Quality Reported in Saskatchewan
Shannon Friesen - Saskatchewan Agriculture

Farmscape for August 25, 2017

Despite ongoing drought in the parts of the south and excess moisture in parts of the north, Saskatchewan crop yields are shaping up to be average with above average quality.
Saskatchewan Agriculture released its weekly crop report yesterday.
Shannon Friesen, a Cropping Management Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, reports 14 percent of the crop has now been combined, well ahead of the five year average of about eight percent, while 15 percent is swathed or ready to straight cut.

Clip-Shannon Friesen-Saskatchewan Agriculture:
The bulk of that harvest is coming from the south part of the province.
In particular the southwest region now has 30 percent of the crop combined, the southeast region has 23 percent, west central 11 percent and east central four percent.
Both the northeast and the northwest now have one percent of the crop in the bin.
Things have been advancing fairly quickly for us.
The crop itself has matured very quickly.
We are also experiencing another period of very warm and very dry weather so things should pick up fairly soon and most producers have indicated that they will be in the field by the end of the month.
Whether that means combining or swathing or starting to desiccate some of their pulse crops.
In the last week topsoil conditions have actually worsened.
We had some days with very strong winds and very hot days and very little moisture.
We were slowly getting better but things have been set back again with a week of less than ideal moisture weather.
At the moment provincially topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as one percent surplus, 32 percent adequate, 40 percent short and 27 percent very short.
On hay land and pasture it is one percent surplus, 26 percent adequate, 35 percent short and 38 percent very short.

Friesen says overall we are expecting average yields for most crops but it all depends on location and quality is much better than we've had in the past couple of years ranging from good to excellent.
