Dr. Leigh Rosengren's Work in Building Awareness of Antimicrobial Use Recognised
Clinton Monchuk - Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan

Farmscape for January 2, 2017

Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan is applauding the efforts of Dr. Leigh Rosengren  in fostering a greater public understanding of how and why livestock and poultry producers use antibiotics.
As part of its "Farms at the Table Conference" held last month in Saskatoon, Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan presented its inaugural "Food & Farming Champion Awards".
The award recognizes individuals and organization who work to advocate for and inspire public trust in agriculture.
Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan Executive Director Clinton Monchuk says Dr. Leigh Rosengren, one of two inaugural winners, has been very influential in getting out to consumers and talking about antimicrobial resistance and use, including blogging about why ranchers and poultry producers use antibiotics.

Clip-Clinton Monchuk-Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan:
Dr. Rosengren is a veterinarian.
She received her veterinary degree here at the University of Saskatchewan.
She has been involved in agriculture for quite some time, including her own ranch down in Midale, Saskatchewan.
She has pretty much spearheaded a lot of the discussion around the use of antibiotics in animal production, in talking about responsible use and explaining to consumers exactly how poultry producers or ranchers use antibiotics and why they use antibiotics.
She not only has the background on the science side but she's also a mother of three children as well so she can explain to consumers in a consumer specific format to say this is why we use it, I'm still comfortable consuming these products and this is why.
Again, somebody who is definitely out there in trying to increase public trust in the food system and explaining it in a way that the public trust her.

Monchuk says Dr. Rosengren has also talked to industry people about different methods to curtail antibiotic use and expand their awareness of the concerns of consumers around antimicrobials.
For Farmscape.Ca, I'm Bruce Cochrane.
