Swine Researchers Invited to Submit their Ideas for Research Proposals
Stewart Cressman - Canadian Swine Research and Development Cluster (Swine Innovation Porc)

Farmscape for October 31, 2016

Swine Innovation Porc is inviting researchers to come forward with suggestions for research they feel would be of benefit to Canada's pork industry.
Swine Innovation Porc issued a call earlier this month for letters of intent for research proposals under the Swine Cluster 3 Research Program, expected under Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's next Agricultural Policy Framework, anticipated to begin April 1, 2018.
Swine Innovation Porc Chair Stewart Cressman says the organization, in consultation with the research community, pork industry stakeholders and government, has identified a list of research priorities, but scientists are being invited to also submit their ideas.

Clip-Stewart Cressman-Swine Innovation Porc:
These discussions have been occurring with the industry.
We've had some internal meetings discussing priorities.
We've reached out to some large production units over the last two years.
We've, as well, had two priority setting meetings, one in Ottawa and one in Winnipeg with industry and the research community but we feel that the lead time requires us to reach out to the research community and invite letters of intent around the priorities that we've developed so far but there's a general call.
You never know what you don't know, so to have a general call as well in specific areas from researchers who feel there's an area that maybe we've missed and it's an area they have knowledge about.
Then we can evaluate it and determine whether we would include it in our proposal.

Cressman says intent of the early call for letters of intent is to be ready to move forward when a new research cluster is approved and avoid the gaps that have occurred in the past.
