Wet Weather Delays Planting of Fall Seeded Cereals
Jake Davidson - Winter Cereals Canada

Farmscape for September 8, 2016

The Executive Director of Winter Cereals Canada says delays in this year's canola harvest and wet seeding conditions have delayed the planting of the fall seeded cereal crops.
Although the planting of fall rye and winter wheat is well underway, wet weather has caused problems.
Jake Davidson, the Executive Director Winter Cereals Canada, reports this year's crops came off early and in excellent condition but the wet weather has delayed the canola harvest, the main cover crop, and made planting difficult.

Clip-Jake Davidson-Winter Cereals Canada:
As we move out to western Manitoba and into Saskatchewan, the canola crop, there's not very much that's been harvested yet.
It's been  out in the field.
We've been getting a lot of moisture out here either in the form of fog or actual daily rain and that's kind of held up the canola harvest a little bit because, even if the crop looks good out there, it's been too wet to go and do anything with it.
Again this year, winter cereals are always at the whim of Mother Nature as far as weather goes.
The crop came off really well with good yields but now we've got to get through this period so we can get the major cover crop, canola, off and get crop in.
The crop was good this year.
It made people a lot of money, it was very high yielding and that always causes people to think about planting but in western Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan, we keep getting these wet wet days, rain in the morning or rain later at night, heavy fog some days that makes everything wet and that's kind of interfering with the ability to get out there and plant because the ground is just too greasy to pull the air seeder behind so that is causing some troubles.

Davidson says the rain showers aren't leaving a lot of water but they leaving planting conditions unsuitable.
