Greater Commitment to Agricultural Research Key to Prosperity
Dan Mazier - Keystone Agricultural Producers

Farmscape for April 14, 2016

The President of Keystone Agricultural Producers says a greater commitment on the part of government to agricultural research and innovation will help keep the best and brightest Manitobans in Manitoba.
Keystone Agricultural Producers is calling on all candidates running in the April 19 Manitoba election to commit to making Manitoba the Canadian Centre for Agricultural Innovation.
KAP President Dan Mazier says farmers are constantly being asked to adapt to the realities of Mother Nature and one of the best ways to do that is through new technology.

Clip-Dan Mazier-Keystone Agricultural Producers:
Over the last decade Manitoba has actually reduced the amount of money they spend on research versus increased and meanwhile they're asking us to innovate more but they're not doing much on research.
Research is one of those things that you invest for today but you hopefully will get gains in the coming days.
It's one of those things, when times are good, not to many people want research but, when times are bad and looking for new things, it's too late because the research should have been done well beyond that.
That's why we're asking for this innovation and we've got some really good projects happening in Manitoba.
Farmers Edge is a really good example of that.
It's 500 employees all over the world and its headquarters is right here in Winnipeg.
I think that's a really good story to tell and tell Manitobans that we should celebrate it and encourage more development like that.
We think the government can do more and that's why we're asking for support.
Why not bring in the next generation of grain handling or agriculture type of entities.
Maybe it is going to be high tech or innovation, but a modernized type agriculture industry to Manitoba.

Mazier says Manitoba currently invests about .18 percent of total farm cash receipts into research, compared to Saskatchewan which invests .62 percent so the Manitoba government needs to bump up that commitment.
